Summertime {and the livin’ is easy}

This time of year my family hums and sometimes belts out the George Gershwin tune, “Summertime,  and the livin’ is easy…”

EASY! Is it?

I Do {so why don’t I}

I do LIKE to catch fireflies and walk in the rain, I do LIKE to run through open fields and roll down gigantic hills, I do LIKE to read inspiring novels and chatter with old friends, I do LIKE to dance to the beat of a different drum and watch the sunrise welcome a new day!

So why don’t I; why don’t I do the things that I do LIKE to do?

Certainly life happens! Hours become filled with the efforts of succeeding and the years fly quickly by; and every now and again, God allows our time to stand still. Flashes of where He’s carried us to and what He’s covered us from appears. And in the moment of standing still and my heartbeat fluttering, I wonder… “Why don’t I?” Allow myself to walk in the rain, roll down that gigantic hill, not question my dance to the beat of that different drum?

Why don’t you?

“This is the Lord’s doing: it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:23-24, ESV)

Are you Poor and Needy? {a humble prayer}

“Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me,  for I am poor and needy. Preserve my life…

There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours…

For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God…

Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name…

I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever…

For great is your steadfast love toward me; you have delivered my soul…”

{Psalm 86, ESV}

It’s FREE… Got it?

I LOVE FREE STUFF! With a family of 5 and a live in guest, we The Lewis’, NEED FREE stuff! Summer has vastly approached my calendar and I have been in heavy pursuit of activities that will provide FUN-FILLED days! (FREE if possible)

The book of Proverbs holds so many attributes of wisdom; a FREE  plethora of knowledge waiting to be attained and then put into action!

Chapter 11 always catches my spirit; it prompts my heart towards a more honest journey. Wisdom guides my feet to walk my path with humility, present myself to others with understanding, guard my tongue against gossip, gain honor because I am trustworthy and gain life because I pursue His righteousness. Through generosity, I gain more because I give FREELY!

We find favor when we seek good! His good! His wisdom!

And guess what? It’s FREELY given and WORTH ATTAINING!

We CHOOSE what we do with the FREE stuff once we receive it… sometimes, its work walking in humility, maintaining understanding with others, keeping our tongue’s from spewing gossip and maintaining PEACE. But, it is worth it!

Receiving the golden ticket to wisdom is FREE; BUT, it takes work to attain it! We must seek it, pray for it, apply it, live it and when we lose our way with it, we MUST press into wisdom again and move forward!

Wisdom will never fail us. It may leave us (because we somehow think our way is better, geez) BUT it will NEVER fail us!

“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and whoever captures souls is wise!” (Proverbs 11:30, ESV)

Vulnerable Moments {the stuff we DON’T like to talk about}

More often than I would like, my FLESH fights with my spirit! I quickly become tangled inside my thoughts of how broken I am. I wrestle with PRIDE and thoughts of ARROGANCE; and sometimes they stay way beyond their welcome!

I try to battle the conflict to the ground; Choke the life out of my fleshly thoughts before they choke the life out of me and WIN the battle without the SWORD!

Some days I am fooled by the disguise of reprieve. I walk with lofty hope that somehow I will be dismissed from the wrath of my pride; yet I meander hopelessly back to the ground. And the wrestle, the fight, the battle; it begins again!

It DOES NOT work! The battle between flesh and spirit wasn’t meant to be fought ALONE.

Have you been there? Can you relate?

I have… in fact, I frequent this arena. Not by choice but my flesh craves self-awareness in its greatest form: PRIDE & ARROGANCE!

I can’t escape the wrestle of my flesh nor can I escape the pull of the Holy Spirit that dwells within me; so, how do I continue to FIGHT the battle and WIN?

~ I remove the noise: eliminate the doors I open to feed my flesh!

~ I gear up for battle: PRAY, submerge myself in scripture, PRAY,  talk to others who hold me accountable & PRAY!

~ I attack the flesh thoughts: speak HIS truth’s into my ME thoughts, shift my focus from my ideal to His ideal, move from operating in my world into operating in His world!

~ I march forward in His truth: we ARE who He says we are and He can do what He says He can… period… nothing else!

All wins do not follow a battle and all battles do not result in a win; But, being PREPARED to FIGHT when you need to will help equip you with a WIN!

How do you do it? Fight the wrestle with your flesh? And WIN?
